Eating Local: A Way of Life

ENJOY Louisiana Seafood at the peak of freshness

There’s a growing trend to eat locally whether purchasing fruit, vegetables and herbs from your farmers market, choosing meat, fowl and eggs from nearby farms, or buying domestic seafood to put on your kitchen table. By eating local you’re helping boost the local economy and eating fresher, healthier and tastier food because it spends less time in transit from farm to table.

Here in Louisiana, we’re lucky enough to be in proximity to some of the best seafood in the world harvested from the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana waterways. Combining the 1536518_10152690057856998_3642498874619251464_n-300x195.pngfresh waters of the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers with coastal tidal waters, the Louisiana shoreline contains a perfect mixture of brackish waters, shallow depths and high levels of nutrients, forming an ideal environment for microscopic marine organisms and a veritable breeding wonderland for delicious shrimp, oysters, crab and finfish.

Out of the 3.9 billion pounds of seafood landed in the United States each year, nearly a billion pounds are caught in the unique waters just off the Louisiana shoreline. This makes our state one of the largest suppliers of seafood in the nation!  In fact, the Gulf Coast produces 70 percent of the nation’s oysters, 69 percent of domestic shrimp, and represents 20 percent of all domestic seafood consumed in the United States. It is estimated that Louisiana accounts for 90-95 percent of the total U.S. production of crawfish, either from wild waters of the state or crawfish farms.
