7 ways to celebrate Louisiana Crawfish Month

Posted by Lindsay Adler on Apr 06 2016

Crawfish lovers have even more reason to rejoice this spring—not only are we in the peak of crawfish season, with every weekend offering more chances to indulge, but April is officially Louisiana Crawfish Awareness Month!

Deanie’s Seafood is proud to take part in this effort to recognize the importance of Louisiana crawfish to the state’s economy and culture.

Louisiana crawfish accounts for 90 percent of the nation’s domestic crawfish and Louisiana_crawfish_boiled_crawfish_is_crawfish_in_season__Deanies_Seafood_New_Orleans.jpgcontributes more than $300 million in annual economic impact. Its annual yield of crawfish ranges from 120 to 150 million pounds.

How will you celebrate Louisiana Crawfish Awareness Month?  Here are seven ways to enjoy our favorite crustacean.

BRING A SACK OF BOILED CRAWFISH TO THE PARK

Pick up 2 to 3 pounds of boiled crawfish per person from your favorite seafood market, set up your spread at the public space or park of your choosing, and enjoy a gorgeous sunset while you’re peeling and eating.  This spring weather has us wanting to spend as much time as possible outdoors… eating crawfish, of course.

HOST YOUR OWN CRAWFISH BOIL

Throwing your own crawfish boil is one of the greatest thrills you’ll ever experience!  You can pull this off no matter what part of the country you live in. Think about how gratifying it will feel to throw your first round of crawfish, sausage, corn, potatoes and garlic onto the table in front of family or friends.  Not sure how to get started?  We’ve got a easy step-by-step guide to help walk you through it.

TEACH A CRAWFISH NOVICE HOW TO EAT CRAWFISH

At every crawfish boil, there’s always that one friend who’s never tried it — or just isn’t sure how to peel crawfish.  Make it your mission to help them out!  Buddy up next to them and offer to lead by example, or if they’re shy about giving it a whirl, you can always send them a video tutorial on how to eat boiled crawfish.

SEND CRAWFISH TO SOMEONE OUT OF STATE

Who wouldn’t want to receive a package in the mail containing Louisiana crawfish? It’s pretty easy to make someone’s day…. show them you care by ordering them either live or boiled crawfish.  What better way to share your love for both Louisiana crawfish and our community’s culture?  Trust us -- they’ll thank you!

USE LEFTOVER BOILED CRAWFISH IN A RECIPE

EAT CRAWFISH AT A NEW ORLEANS FESTIVAL

Every weekend this month, there is a plethora of festivals around town to choose from — and you can pretty much count on being able to get boiled crawfish at any of them!  Deanie’s Seafood celebrates crawfish with our Pinch A Palooza Festival and Crawfish Eating Contest on Sunday, April 17 at Deanie's original location in Bucktown. With 5,000 lbs of boiled crawfish, plus crawfish specialities such as crawfish etouffee, crawfish nachos, fried crawfish tails and crawfish pasta… you can’t go wrong!
